How to get a mortgage for your first home

Find the right deal for you

We’ll show you how to get a mortgage from start to finish, including what you need to tell us and the steps you’ll need to take.

How to get a mortgage

1. Work out how much you can borrow

Make an appointment to see one of our industry qualified Mortgage Advisers in one of our local branches. They will be able to quickly tell you how much you can borrow based on your income and spending commitments. You can do this by visiting your local branch, call to make an appointment or complete our call-back form online.

Guernsey:+44 (0) 1481 755 288*
Isle of Man:+44 (0) 1624 684 262*
Jersey:+44 (0) 1534 812 175*

2. Get confirmation of your ability to proceed

  • Our Mortgage Advisers will give you a clear indication as to whether you will be able to borrow the amount you need – without affecting your credit score. It usually takes about 30 minutes to complete this assessment, and while it isn’t a guarantee we’ll lend to you, having your Mortgage Advisers approval to proceed to a full application will help you make realistic plans and allow you to view and make offers on properties that are affordable against your circumstances
  • Barclays will expect you to provide a deposit towards your purchase to at least 10% or 15% (in IoM we now need a minimum of 15%) of the property purchase price.

3. Get ready for your mortgage application

  • Once you’ve found a property and had an offer accepted our Mortgage Advisors will prepare a full recommendation of the right mortgage option tailored to suit your requirements and then help you submit the mortgage application
  • We will need your ID and address verification, and provide proof of your income and spending commitments. In advance of your appointment your Mortgage Adviser will contact you to let you know what documents you need to bring.

4. Complete and track your application

  • After your appointment, we’ll be in touch if we need any more details, or if we need to arrange access to the property for a valuation. Once everything’s done appropriately, we’ll issue your mortgage offer
  • You can also keep in touch with your applications progress by speaking with your Mortgage Adviser as they will track and oversee your application from initial meeting to the mortgage completing.
